In the one-act 'heute auf morgen' (from today to tomorrow 1928/29) Schoenberg returns to the musical theatre fifteen years after the completation of 'Glückliche Hand (1910/13) in the radically altered climate of Berlinin the 1920s, using for the first time in a destined for the stage the new dodecaphonic system, in that decade modified and repeatedly experimented on. Another opera had been concelved in 1928, Moses und Aron, an undertaking much greater, for which Schoenberg at that point had only begun to sketch out the libretto; the actual composition was begun in May 1930 (the completed the second act in March 1932 and the third act was never set to music). The drawing up of Ven heute auf morgen was completed rapidly, as nearly always took place with Schoenberg: begun on the 25th October 1928, the opera in one act was completed on the 1st January 19297 the composer specifies at 3.15 p.m.). The libretto was written by Schoenberg's second wife, Gertrud Kollisch, who signed it with the speudonym of Max Blonda.
