These (excerpts of) eleven songs were amongst the many performed by Beautiful Nubia and the Roots Renaissance Band at an outdoor concert in the city of Ibadan, Nigeria on a cool, breezy evening in late November 2009. The songs come from four different albums: “Owuro L’ojo”, “Pass De Kalabash”, “Keep ‘Em Moving” and “What A Feeling!” (from the 2002 album - Jangbalajugbu); “Awilele”, “Oke Bola”, and “Oruko Rere” (from the 2004 album - Awilele); “Higher Steps”, “Ife Oloyin” and “Mama Agba’s Twilight Treat” (from the 2006 album - Fere); and “Ka Jo Ma Se Po” (from the 2008 album - Kilokilo) Though not at full strength, the band was, as usual, in high spirits. This was no canned show with preset times and arrangements. The music was free-flowing and followed the direction dictated by the energy flowing between the audience and the band. And, yes, you will hear some imperfections along the way, including some faint feedback (always blame the sound engineer for that, but hey it was outdoors!) and exuberant back-up singing occasioned by a musician trying to play his instrument while dancing and singing at the same time. You will hear and feel the joy that was so evident on stage, and you can imagine yourself being there on that typical West African evening, drinking some palm-wine and dancing or just calmly, happily, feasting your ears upon the musical delicacy being dished out by BN and his group of happy men.
