Cy Donovan, the creative force behind Airmodular, has enlisted Soren Roquentin of The Lot, to co-produce and perform on selected tracks, including The Last Thought, and the title track, inspired by the surrealist Ingmar Bergman movie of the same name. The movie, in which Bergman presents a tortured protagonist suffering through a never-ending nightmare of vampire-like people, takes its title from the time at night between the hours of 3 and 5 am - a time, it has been said, when most people are born or die. A haunting refrain, Hour of the Wolf draws upon Donovan’s personal memories of his childhood doctor. The title track is followed by the powerful Knife In The Wind (On a Summery Day), a compelling tune that contrasts a lighthearted tone with the darkness of youth-driven gun violence. The dreamy Dream Faster comes next – a meditation on the artistic pitfalls of being swallowed up by one’s own creation. Up All Night raises the tempo with an upbeat portrayal of a downbeat character – just your average serial killer with an addiction problem. The iron skies brighten with the ethereally infectious Dancin In The Rain followed by the whimsical Pigs In A Pen. The album concludes with the apropos The Last Thought, a hypnotic instrumental masterpiece featuring Soren Roquentin’s tranquilizing cello.
