You watch the horse carriage vanish at the entrance of the valley, turn around and realise where you are - alone in a ghost town (German: Geisterstadt). This is admittedly not the home of OMEGA MASSIF - the quartet comes from the quite vivid Würzburg, Germany - but it is certainly the home of their music. With the echoing sounds of 'Geisterstadt' in your mind you start strolling through the forsaken streets, passing along the ruins of shops, bars, and houses. The sound of your steps and the murmur of the wind coming down from the mountains mix with the brooding melodies in your head, telling long forgotten stories. You leave the town behind and approach the former center of the town people's lives - the mine. Its monstrous entrance makes you feel as if you were standing in front of an old temple. You ignore all instincts and enter the mine. Through endless shafts and tunnels you descend deeper and deeper into the massive mountain and the further down you get, the more the sounds and melodies in your mind are compressed, infinite echoes seem to come back from the shaft walls. You feel as if you loose the orientation, loose your mind, you increase your speed, start running, desperately touching the walls, looking for a way out. But there is none. And so you realise that you are lost forever, swallowed by the mountain. Your legs soften, you lay down on the ground, and your heartbeat starts to melt with the rolling basses, the heartbeat of the mountain. Fortunately you can just press the 'Stop' button of your player and start feeling better in your comfortable home. But chances are high that OMEGA MASSIF's debut GEISTERSTADT will take you on a another trip next time you listen to it. The sounds of this album may remind you of the good old records of PELICAN and ISIS, but OMEGA MASSIF go much further. The spiralling melodies overlaying the rolling ri_s and pummeling basses make the songs of GEISTERSTADT sound celestial and infernal at the same time.This is not the usual silent start/big climax thing well-known from postrock records - this is one of the best instrumental/metal/doomcore records in the past years. This digital release includes four songs originally recorded for their demo "Kalt" as bonus.
