What ABLAZE was looking for were simply two things as we approached this third Millennial Masters volume: great compositions and excellent performances that were well recorded. We were again impressed at the level of the submissions and this third disc features music of wonderful composers from Russia, India and the United States. Artem Anuchin was awarded a place on the disc for his Mercury for solo piano, which impressed us with its stark power and sustained intensity. Asha Srinivasan composed a work for two woodwinds and electronics that focuses on the bright instrumental agility of the winds coupled with an evocative and integrated use of electronics. Young American composer Robert Kotcher’s Sonata for Violin and Piano is cast in a traditional form yet features an innovative and personal approach to melodic construction and harmony that is matched with a passionate and dramatic style. Inventive young American composer Charles Peck makes a stunning contribution with his work for two bassoons that explores the great sonority and timbral possibilities of this ensemble. The disc concludes with an unrelenting and superbly crafted work by American composer Nolan Stolz. This work is a piano quartet called Catharsis II which is brilliantly played by the Avery Ensemble. Millennial Masters Volume 3 continues ABLAZE Records commitment to new music and to showcasing new talent from all over the world.
