His songs come from a life of sin, pain, abuse, heartache, misery, depression, guilt, regret, and loss. In his words, "Just what you need to write songs. I'm proof anybody that doesn't know what they're doin' can do somethin' with what they're not doin'. I never wrote or played nothin' 'til I was over the hill and half way to the bone yard. When asked if people relate to his approach he said, "It don't matter. I'm doin' what I need to do. Besides it keeps me old." He's honest: He admits, "I'm not much of a singer or musician but what can I do! The words keep coming out and I have to do something with them." When he first started writing, someone told him to throw them in the trash and get a real job in a grocery store. He says, "I told'em to stick that idea in the toilet paper aisle." When asked if songwriting changed his life he said, "I have no maid you know! Probably never shall." A heavy hearted cold breath from the Headstone Gazette reviewed the CD this way: This CD sounds like it was done on a 1950s tape recorder with a microphone taken off a super 8 movie projector. The guitar sounds like a $35 pawnshop special. The production must have been done by a five year old who recorded into a tin can in front of an oscillating fan that was in a window, open to traffic, birds and chickens. JD2's reply: "Hey, some of you critics actually have ears! Thanks for noticing, you're almost correct. Of course most of you, so called, experts have never done anything but gripe about things anyway so I don't feel so bad. I know it's your thing! At least I got you to listen and I think if you put this CD on a decent rig, it will come across pretty good, no matter what the Gazette says." Shoestring Records own "crack staff" reviewed the CD this way: JD2 is a one man band when recording in his can and a single acoustic act when traveling. (He takes the can with him to cook beans in.) The CD is an eclectic mix of JD2's own Rocky Boogie Blues, Hokey Folksy Country and Jingly Jangly Jug Band Baroque. He plays all instruments, writes and sings all songs and harmony and produces all arrangements. He says, "That's one reason it sounds as bad as it does and why it took so long to do. I don't write, sing or play as fast as I used to." He promises, "At least two songs will be a favorite. The more you listen the more you like. My songs are like mold, they start to grow on ya." But Wait! There's more! Famous People have said: The world has a choice! This is a Senior Movement. (or was it a senior moment?) JD2 is an alternative to Dinky Danny & the Dong Dongs, or UpTight & the HighBalls, or Cotton Candy & the Sweethearts, or N UR Face & the City Rats with special guest Mr. Exclusive & the Wing Tips, not to mention Outlandish & the Crotch Grabbers with Big Bad Bling & the Cadillac Hearse. From the JD2 Fan File: Do you always put lyrics in your CD's? JD2: Oh yeah that's at the top of the list. The thing I hate the most is not knowing what somebody is saying in a song. There's two schools of thought on that, but I like to know what's being said even if it doesn't always sound that way on the recording. So I go the extra step and include the lyrics for ever song. From the JD2 Fan File: What about retirement? JD2: I don't drive a big car or live in a big house or make $20 million to hit, dribble or catch a base, basket or football. I got nothin' against that, I just don't relate to those folks, like the President, they've all been walled off from regular folks, they wouldn't give ya the time a day. I will though! 'cept I can't afford a watch! so I tell time by the Sun. I don't expect everybody to understand or like what I do but I do it all the same. Retirement ain't for me. Hobbys? When asked why he doesn't play golf like others his age JD2 said, "You can play with a dog but you can't play with golf. Golf is all about control. If you want to play a game, try life! When asked what he does in his spare time he said, "I go hit a baseball coming at me 90 mph, now that'll put smoke in your wigwam." What's in the future? JD2: There may not be one, where we are is all we got." When asked about his next CD he said, "It should be ready soon. At my age, I can't wait too long. It's called, Everybody's Gunnin' 4 Me. Keep an eye out for each other and for heaven's sake enjoy the music. Life's too short. Thanks for reading and listening. JD2 says: This Album is a low-tech Everly Bro's, John Conlee, George Harrison & Jimmy Reed singin' with the Little Rascals International Silver String Submarine Band thrown in for a touch of Class! You might say it's a growlin' dog, a howlin' cat and a hummin' gerbil. You decide!
