I had wanted to do an acoustic album for some time. I talked to Kerry Kearney, my good friend and a great slide guitar player, about it. He had just taken over a music store in Brooklyn called King James Music. There is an empty flat upstairs from the store with two great-sounding rooms in it. We thought that this might be a good place to record. Originally I wanted to keep it simple and just record as a duo with him, but one thing led to another and before long we had assembled our usual cast of characters to record. Still, I wanted to record “old school” with a bunch of musicians in a room playing live at the same time, and I wanted to keep it acoustic – so that’s what we did. I called up my friend, Danny Sheehan, who has a mobile recording setup (The Mobile Loft). He came down from Woodstock, set his gear up in one room, and we set up in the other. We filled the bathtub full of beer, soda and juice, and over the two nights of October 20th and 21st under a full moon we recorded a bunch of songs I'd written and some that Kerry and I had written together. Each one of those songs appears on the album. I’ve also included two bonus tracks that I recorded elsewhere: One More Round (A Requiem for the New Yorker) and Last Train Out, a song I wrote in memory of the late Allen Woody, which features label mate Jason Crosby on fiddle. Although a few of the songs on this album are 9/11 related (New Season, Soul Searchlight, These Colors Don’t Run and One More Round), I did not set out to do a 9/11 tribute album. I am a New Yorker so that event is never far from my mind. I love the spontaneity of this project. Most of the songs had a brief discussion, one run-through and then were cut. We had a blast recording this stuff, and I think it comes through in the tracks. Hopefully you'll agree. One final note: We didn't know it at the time, but the upstairs flat is apparently haunted. We must have awakened the ghost that lives there because doors slam, bells ring and floorboards creak all the time now. Kerry had someone who knows about supernatural things confirm this. Who knows? It could be true. Michael F.
