Rick Broussard’s Two Hoots and a Holler’s eleventh album arrives today as perhaps his most complete, diverse, confident and promising album yet released. “Time Has Shown Me” is an apt title for the 13-song collection. It is a masterful display of so much of what Broussard has learned since leaving San Antonio for Austin in 1984. The driving punk of “Black Cat Lounge” and “Seek Strike Destroy”, the anthematic, Roy Orbison-inspired beauty of “Typical of You” (in a duet with fellow San Antonio native Rosie Flores) and “Impossible”, the Buddy Holly-inspired “Time Has Shown Me”, and the Doug Sahm-inspired Tex-Mex punk of “I’m Not Going Back To San Antone” each honors his musical heroes but never steals from them. Broussard is inspired by, among others, Sahm, Holly, Orbison, as well as Brits such as Joe Strummer, Nick Lowe and Pete Townsend. Austin in 2016 is a far, far cry from Austin in 1984, a fact Broussard lightheartedly skewers in “Austin Traffic”, a Ray Price shuffle in the fine Texas tradition. Powering his new songs are one of Austin’s tightest rhythm sections, bassist Brad Fordham and drummer Lisa Pankratz. They perfectly bolster Broussard, taking his new songs and somehow making them sound classic yet absolutely new and alive. Pankratz and Fordham are tremendously positive musicians, and their passion and intensity for Broussard’s latest songs is a beautiful thing indeed. Fordham played bass on Broussard’s “Let It Go” album in 2009, and Pankratz & Fordham performed off-and-on for the past 15 years with Broussard, including serving as rhythm section for the 2006 covers-only record “Songs our Vinyl Taught Us”, but this is the first time they’ve recorded a full-length LP of original songs with him. Recorded in Austin in blissful analog by Cris Burns and mastered by the prolific and respected Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Fleshtones, John Spencer Blues Explosion), “Time Has Shown Me” takes the Americana genre and rocks it with a Texas fervor.
