Unlike the 2000 Texas compilation The Greatest Hits, I Don't Want a Lover: The Collection, released by Universal Music's British discount label Spectrum Music, does not focus on the Scottish band's hit singles. True, five of their U.K. chart singles between 1989 and 1997 are including, among them the Top Ten hits "Say What You Want" and the title track. But the bulk of the disc is given over to LP tracks selected from Texas' first four albums, Southside, Mothers Heaven, Ricks Road, and White on Blonde. And that selection is sufficiently judicious to suggest that there were more potential hits included on those albums, among them "One Choice," "Dream Hotel," "I've Been Missing You," and "Postcard." Perhaps the ideal consumer for the album is someone who doesn't know the band's catalog, or has only heard "I Don't Want a Lover," and, after spending the modest amount the disc costs, will be inspired to pick up the full-length records from which the tracks are drawn. The album does not, however, by itself constitute an accurate best-of for Texas' first eight years of recording.
