简介

“Wild Hog in the Woods” is a rowdy collection of raw traditional old-time folk tunes, served in foot-stomping fashion by Cincinnati’s acoustic folk ramblers, the Tillers. It is the group’s third album release, this time featuring renowned fiddler Uncle Mike Carr. After two albums blending original and established folk material, the Tillers decided to deliver a stripped-down smattering of traditional old-time roots. Hearing of Carr’s reputation for Kentucky-style fiddle mastery, the trio resolved to track him down for the project, finding a musical soulmate. Carr taught them gems from his treasure-trove of old and obscure tunes, including the album’s title track. The result is a stew of home-recorded backwoods ballads and rompers in the band’s signature, thumping style. There are buoyant, guttural renderings of play-tunes like “Sugar Hill” and “Sail Away Ladies”, lullabies like “Say Darlin Say”, a capella tales of murder and moonshiners, and jaw-harp odes to groundhogs and muskrats. The track “Wild Hog in the Woods” is a man-versus-beast adventure, starring a flesh-eating, blood-drinking hog and a backwoods struggle to defeat him. There are sawing fiddles, clawhammer banjo workouts, occasional jaw harps, crooning sing-alongs, percussive guitar, and quaking wooden bass-both plucked and bowed. Produced by Mark Van Patten in the summer of 2011, the album was released to the public that November at the Historic Southgate House in Newport, KY, selling out the house and inducing mass sweat and hysteria. The quartet of Carr, Oberst, Geil and Geil will not disappoint any lovers of old-time revelry, or revelry in general. This (allegedly unbreakable) disc is a raucous, playful good time. Get it if you can!
