Singer/songwriter John Thomas received his first guitar when he was 10 years old. Although the grunge style of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam influenced him to pick up the instrument, it was the songwriting of Dave Matthews that he credits as his musical inspiration. John hails from Lincoln Park, MI, where he lived until he was 17. As his senior year of high school was set to begin, he made the decision to move to Omaha, NE, to play Junior A hockey. Two years later he received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska-Omaha. “Being away from my family and friends made life hard, but at the same time, made songwriting easy,” John said. While in Omaha, NE John began playing music regularly in bars, coffee houses, and night clubs. In a short time, he developed a following and in the summer of 2005 recorded his debut solo acoustic EP, Howard Street. He sold his first shipment of 500 CD’s within only a couple months, promoting them at shows, online, and even at his college hockey games. But the 6 year stretch in Nebraska did not dissuade John from performing full band shows during Christmas and summer breaks. Alongside two or three longtime musical friends, the group would play cover gigs in hole-in-the-wall-bars, often filling them with family and friends. “It never mattered to us where we played,” John said. “To us, it was about the music, the friendships, and the good times.” After a brief stint of professional hockey, John decided to hang up his skates and move on in a different direction. It's taken nearly 8 years to get the new CD recorded and published - but Far From Nowhere is worth the wait.
