This piece is inspired by Julia Ward Howe’s famous “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and by the story of a blind beggar, Bartimaeus, found in Matthew 10:46-52. As Bartimaeus hears Jesus’ voice, he cries out until Jesus answers him. When Bartimaeus asks for his sight, Jesus replies by commending Bartimaeus on his faith despite his blindness. Musical ideas spanning multiple genres combine to musically express the belief that “Hearing is Seeing, Seeing is Believing, and Believing is Salvation.”
