It was 1992, and Shane Culloty was living in a house in the Kerry countryside. He was seven years old. “Well” he said to his parents one day. “There’s not much to do around here. I think I’ll make an album with singing and guitars and some distorted synths and put it on the Internet, see what they think of it.” “Oh?” they asked, confused, but not surprised, because he often said things that made no sense. Mumble mumble he went. Oh wow he’d say. “What’s the Internet?” they asked, but Shane said nothing, and it’s just as well, because imagine if the Internet was invented in Kerry! A while later he said “Well, it’s 2000. I’d better learn some instruments.” So he learnt guitar from a travelling artist, and learnt to play his mother’s piano, and joined a band with his best friends, and wrote and sang some songs in Berlin, and that was fun for a while. But the band broke up, and things were quiet then for a while, so he went to Dublin. “Wow” he said, “this is where it all happens” and it wasn’t really, but everyone was pretty happy anyway. He fell in love and got a job and a new microphone and said “Well, it’s 2013, I think I’ll put out some of those songs.” Suddenly Mark Willis appeared and said “Hey, I have a record label!” And he did. And here we are.
