So now that my basement's finished, I'm breaking out my dusty old stereo equipment, plugging in speakers that haven't moved air in years, and organizing my CD collection. I'm going through disks I haven't listened to in ages when I happen upon this "Axel Bauer" CD that I'd bought when I was studying in Paris five or six years ago. I bought the disk originally after hearing the song "Laissez Venir" on the radio and being reminded of Jeff Buckley, the incredibly gifted, young American singer who drowned not long after recording his debut album "Grace." I'm a little skeptical as to whether the music will hold up after all those many years, but I pop it into the CD player anyway. My first reaction: "Wow! This CD really kicks!" I'm glad I put it on, and I'm listening to it as I type this. For those who may be unfamiliar with Bauer's music (or who may have never heard of him) I'd describe the sound on this disk as very close to that of Jeff Buckley, but louder (though not uniformly so), and more electric. If you liked Jeff Buckley's song "Eternal Life" then you'll almost certainly like this album. It's a shame Bauer never caught on in the U.S. and it obviously has something to do with our allergy to anything that's recorded in a foreign language as opposed to the quality of his music. Still, it should be noted that several of the songs are recorded in English (including the excellent "Bonnie and Clyde") and that Bauer's English betrays absolutely no accent (he's obviously spent some time in an English speaking country). So even if you, too, are allergic to music that is sung in a foreign language, there's something here for you, too! All in all, this is definitely a five star effort.
