I have to admit I was a little surprised to find out MAUSOLEUM signed with Razorback Records, as the band contains two former members of INCANTATION, but it actually turned out to be a pretty good surprise after all. MAUSOLEUM play a style of death metal in the vein of AUTOPSY (and yes, Billy, I did finally recently pick up MENTAL FUNERAL and it is good, so get off of my balls already) mixed with the slow-mid paced doom segments typical in INCANTATION releases with a production that sounds like the album was recorded in the Batcave while Batman and Robin moshed with Batgirl while Alfred swung around on the Batarang. The album has a very depressing and gloomy feel to it that Incantation fans will feel comfortable with, with plenty of wailing solos mixed amongst the doom and gloom throughout the 9 tracks. This is just solid, punishing, dirty and disgusting old school death metal that fans of AUTOPSY and ONWARD TO GOLGOTHA-era INCANTATION will sh*t their pants over. My only complaint is the production is a tad bit rough, and had it been cleaned up even slightly it would have made for a huge improvement in overall sound quality, but, hell, for this style of music this production is basically perfect anyway. With bands like FUNERUS, MAUSOLEUM and EMBALMING THEATRE around reviving the old school death metal sound, I think I’m going to have a lot of great material to look forward to for years to come.
