The Raag Ahir Bhairav featured on this CD is a morning piece with a mood of devotion. At five movements and 63 minutes, it fills the whole disc. The first is the "Alap," which is, as usual, very slow. The "Jor," like the "Alap," is performed without percussion, but soon builds to a quick pace with thrilling note clusters. With the third movement, the pace slows down again, but the tablas (played by Anand Gopal Bandopadhyay with an incredible liquid rapidity) enter and keep things interesting. The pace picks up for the fourth movement and then accelerates to a climax in the fifth. Buddhadev Das Gupta does not play the sitar, as on the stereotypical Indian recording, but the mellower Indian lute known as the sarod. This work is probably too long and complex for the complete beginner, but is recommended for anyone building an Indian classical collection.
