I bought my first guitar when I was 18,and it's taken 50 years to get to this first solo album.In the last few years I have recycled my so far music-life experience into this collection of pieces for guitar. I grew up on Tyneside,north of England,and always had ears for music. Just the sound of Northumbrian pipes melts my heart. A Big Bill Broonzy concert in 1957 changed my life:for about ten years I was addicted to blues guitar.In London I hung out with Alexis Korner and Davey Graham; my musical horizons widened. Then for five years I only played ragas with Indian classical players-Keshav Sathe(tabla) and Clem Alford(sitar) in various bands.(Indo-jazz Fusions,Magic Carpet) This was followed by an experimental period,I built a few invented instruments for myself and played with some crazy avant- garde improvising groups.I became dissatisfied with my basic musical education and I studied as a part time guitar student at the Guildhall school, and various theory and composition classes at adult institutes. Most of the public playing I've done since then has been in the context of advaita / meditation events. And gradually over the last decade+ I have developed and refined the pieces on this album,all of which have their origins in some dimension of my life so far. 'Recovery suite' are pieces that evoke experiences of my life in the sense of 12-step fellowship. 'Pentafram cycle' is my story of the historic journey of people and music from Africa to America and beyond. 'Phye Reevum' is in the form of a 'wave',as danced at 'Five rhythms',my favourite night out. I cannot classify my music simply ,there are reverberations of blues,ragas,songs without words,improvisations,jazz, baroque and celtic music. Perhaps you will hear something else!
