Smotherbox started out as a heavy metal/hard rock act founded back in 2007 by Nathan Embree, Ryan Hecker and Tyler Moore. After many setbacks and countless line up changes the band has evolved into an acoustic project between, original member Nathan Embree and new addition Craig “Lolly” Lalonde. Craig replaced Ryan as the lead guitarist and driving force behind the band’s new softer sound.

Although the band has gone acoustic, lyrically they remain as dark and deep as always. They try to write songs with meaning that tell stories rather than focusing on catchy hooks and empty lyrics. Nathan, the lead singer/songwriter, has been writing songs since he first started playing guitar 12 years ago. Much like the “bipolar” method, in which Nathan lives his life, his influences also range from one extreme to the next.

Key major influences on his song-writing start with folk artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and even Jewel and end with heavier acts such Tool, Marilyn Manson and In Flames. This odd mixture of heroes makes for an original and bizarre writing style that seems refreshingly out of place in the acoustic world. Craig’s smooth sometimes bluesy leads, reminiscent of early Angus Young and/or Tony Iommi, bring a welcome familiarity to the unique rhythms of the band.

Although both key members of the band work full time at demanding jobs for Spectra Energy, they still desperately cling to the dream of one day being able leave the patch behind and do what they love, which is... and always will be... music.
