简介

Suzie Brown专辑介绍:The daily album today comes from Suzie Brown, a singer/songwriter/cardiologist out of Philadelphia, PA. Yup, you read that right — cardiologist. Check out the bio on her Facebook page for the full story, but after an impromptu performance at a friend’s wedding, Brown found the confidence to pursue music as a career, in spite of a pretty dense education in medicine. Her appropriately-titled debut, Heartstrings, has garnered the praise of critics and fans alike, and most will admit that it’s hard not to fall for her “honey-twanged voice.” Almost There opens with the title track, a stew of metaphors about being close but still so far away. The song comes off almost as a critique of the apathetic; Brown has obviously made a lot of leaps of faith as well as sacrifices in her pursuit to realize her musical dreams, and the number of “almosts” can seem daunting. Ultimately, however, the song ends with the notion that through perseverance, we may find ourselves there, instead of “almost there.” The next track, “Sugar Blues” takes a few quirky steps on its way to a poppy refrain that could pass for an old radio ad for dairy products. Such a random and awesome combination of elements is present here; the play between instrumentation and lyrics is very fun. With her voice, Brown could kick back and keep things uninspired, but it’s quite obvious that she has foregone that route. While simple, tracks like “Sugar Blues” are wickedly intelligent and merit quite a few listens to really appreciate. The riff that keeps time in the “28 Days” verses is hypnotic, paralyzing, and very apropos. Brown has the uncanny ability to expound upon the most delicate emotion and flesh it out into a song, describing over and again, but saying nothing. Her songs are cryptic but identifiable. “Receipt For Love” is a real cookie of a tune, baked with all the key ingredients: a critique of consumerist society, a disdain for love gone awry, and claptastic, bluesy instrumentation. The ridiculously upbeat “I’m Gonna Be A Wheel Someday” follows. If they had club bangers in the old wild west saloons, this would be it. Brown’s talents, influences and end products seem to know no bounds on this release. “Fallen Down” steals the show with its touching lyrics, subtle instrumentation and beautiful harmonies. Brown claims that the Sandy Hook school shootings were her inspiration for this work, revealing her more sensitive side. This side also shows up in two of the later tracks, “Don’t Know If I Dare” and “Space Between.” For every lyric that Brown writes about the most direct and personal of her relationships, it seems she writes one about her relationship with the world and with society as a whole. Within the set of songs that concern the world around us, Brown expresses a lot of guilt, confusion, and sadness. These are emotions that are universal to us when we experience national tragedies, or even those ones that happen right in our own backyard. Brown’s treatment of them is just one more way in which she distances herself from every other artist who can pick up a guitar and sing a lick.
