Doot-Doot - Fantasy for Broadcast Signal and Car or Truck Horn This tune is one Art Maddox and I originally wrote back in 1982 as an opening and closing theme for the Toronto based THE SCTV NETWORK comedy show on NBC, but the show went off the air before it got plugged in. Since they didn’t use it, I got to keep it. I liked the fact that it was a comedy inspired tune, so I turned it into a pseudo-classical comedy bit for the Smothers Brothers. Dick played the signal on a handheld Casio keyboard and Tom played a klaxon horn. They premiered it on a Dick Clark TV special "Super Stars and Classic Cars," that aired on Dec 2nd, 1983, which was a benefit to raise funds to help keep Bill Harrahs' antique auto collection intact. They also played it on "Saturday Night Live”. I subsequently found a great spot for this tune in my live concerts, especially in my Christmas concerts in Oregon. I used it as a guest number for visiting celebrities, dignitaries or sponsors, who could be featured as "Car/Truck Horn soloists." It always turned out to be fun for all and was a great way to involve a special guest in a number in the show…even guests who weren’t musicians. You couldn’t really make a mistake, so how anyone played it didn’t matter. It was also a big hit with the musicians and the crowd at my concert with the USAF Band at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. in February 2000. I suppose Doot-Doot falls into the category of being a Novelty Rock tune. It has a sort of “cartoony” hit to it, like music for an updated Keystone Kops caper. Art & I were big fans of composer & arranger Neal Hefti’s music, especially his Batman TV show theme. We thought of “Doot Doot” as being “Batman Bach”. It would be good music for comedy film scenarios, frenetic chase scenes (ones that end abruptly…whatever). It might also work as a video game tune. My ultimate dream for this tune was for one day to have all of the radio stations in L.A. play it simultaneously and have everybody on the freeway honk their horns in sync with the car horn on the track. A salute to all who commute, a commuter toot-out, the greatest honk-a-long in history... perhaps the only honk-a-long in history.
