Is there any resemblance between a Dutch redheaded female saxplayer in the current era on the one hand, and the rough souljazz made by Afro-American men in the the ‘60s and ‘70s of the last century on the other? Yes there is. For a long time, saxophonist Jelske Hoogervorst has a soft spot for the intensely groovy, sometimes surprisingly simple compositions of her heroes like Stanley Turrentine, Cannonball Adderley, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris and Herbie Hancock. She started a band and named it Sugar (after Stanley Turrentine’s composition and LP). With Sugar, Jelske restored some beautiful forgotten souljazz tunes, added new flavors to the genre and re-arranged poptunes into jazz-instrumentals. Their debut-album, entitled Ode, was financed by the audience through crowdfunding. It’s an ode to the heroes and the era of souljazz.
