Some of these songs are older than a decade, well, one of them – but that’s what happens when your singer-songwriter is too shy to play her own music live. Thank goodness Charles ‘Chuck’ Jenkins (The Zhivagos, Icecream Hands) took her aside and gave her a talking to as part of his Push Songs program; now Wiley Red Fox is more than just a daydream, it’s a band, and a recording and there’s no more slinking around in the shadows for front lady Clemmie Wetherall (Zeta, The Keepsakes and Mandala Project) she’s had to pony up and take the reins. Wiley Red Fox’s self-titled debut EP was recorded and produced by Damien Sutton (Circal Studios) from The Bon Scotts, mixed by Neil Thomason from Headgap Studios and mastered by Adam Dempsey from Jack the Bear’s Deluxe Mastering, with love and support from label Sound of Melbourne Records. You can find the usual indie suspects over the 6 tracks, there’s a bit of heartbreak, some angst and indifference and generous lashings of ennui. And look, it’s probably just a little too heartfelt to ever be really cool, but we think there might be something for everyone to enjoy, a touch of country, a spoonful of grunge and a bunch of pop melodies we hope to have you humming in the shower. Clemmie promises there will be more guitar solos on the next EP and perhaps a few songs over 5 minutes, but we think short, sharp and sweet is a winning formula. So if you like Jonathan Richman and the Modern Day Lovers, Wilco, Dinosaur Jr and The Sunnyboys– so do we! We’re not sure if we sound like any of those bands but we asked our fan and he thought we sound like The Sundays.
