Zips FM - in 2008, The Zips were in London twice, to play, Alan McGee's Death Disco night at Notting Hill Arts Club. The second gig was recorded from the desk onto an mp3 player, which, the following morning was linked to a tiny portable FM transmitter, plugged into our car's cigarette lighter socket. By tuning the car radio to 107fm, one of the songs, 30 Years of Punk Rock could be heard blasting out, over the noise of rush hour traffic, as we headed north, up the Finchley Road - "This is radio - Zips FM!" Secret Life of a Teenage Punk Rocker - thanks to Cherry Red Records and author and former-Eater, Andy Blade, for being cool about the use of the comments on the front jacket of his book, The Secret Life Of A Teenage Punk Rocker. The comments form the lyrics for each of the 3 verses. As one of the quotes from Jonathan Ross goes - "buy one for the punk in your life!" Subsequently, Henry Rollins and Don Letts have also given their blessing to use of their quotes. Stop The War - Winston Churchill famously remarked at a White House luncheon, on June 26th 1954, that "To jaw jaw is always better than to war war." It was relevant then, and it's even more relevant now. (Straight To) Helmand - thanks (as ever) to The Clash for inspiration when arranging this song. Buy their album, Combat Rock, or download Straight To Hell. Meanwhile, a few years back, I'm sitting in front of my computer screen, late at night, trying to ignore the trivia and celeb goss on any number of so-called news pages, while a banner scrolls across the top, proclaiming "another soldier killed in Helmand".....and another....and another.
