简介
Pacing the floor at Punk’s birth in the Seventies, splitting up as it was overtaken by Ska and New Romantics in the Eighties, and re-forming due to European bootleg interest in their back catalogue in the Noughties, Glasgow’s socio-politico-proto punk band The Zips, are keen to make up for lost time. With 5 new cd eps on their own Tenement Toons label, including the Dumbstruck ep, which features crowd-favourite, Whodunnit, an exploration of the conspiracy theories surrounding the death of Marilyn Monroe, and a download single for Oxfam’s Make Poverty History campaign, plus tracks on numerous compilation cds, including Bored Teenagers Vol2, The Zips finally released their debut album, Guitars4Hire, on Tenement Toons (TEN10) in Sept 2006 – 27 years after their debut single! Copies of that single, The Zips ep, which received extensive airplay on the late-great John Peel Show, have fetched up to $427 on eBay, and it was listed as number 37 in the top 100 most collectable punk records, of all time, in Record Collector. On the back of that accolade, it was re-issued in 2009, in the original 7” vinyl format, by Brooklyn-based label, Sing Sing Records. In early 2012, The Zips unleashed their second album, 19 Forevva, on Tenement Toons (TEN19). The12 songs range from a dig at fashion guru, Henry Holland for apparently nicking the sleeve design from The Zips ep, for a range of t-shirts, to one based around quotes from, Henry Rollins, Jonathan Ross and Don Letts about former-Eater, Andy Blade’s book, The Secret Life of a Teenage Punk Rocker, via the anti-war trilogy of, Angerland, Stop The War, and (Straight To) Helmand, with its nod to Straight To Hell, by The Clash. Now, as the 10th anniversary of the death of Joe Strummer approaches on December 22nd, the band release a download-only single on Tenement Toons (TEN20) called, Road To Strummerville, for the benefit of his charity, Strummerville. Friends to the stars, Kate Nash is a fan, and no strangers to local radio airwaves, the band also have a reputation for rip-roaring stage performances, which means they are always in demand on the live circuit, including the annual punk bash at Blackpool, the Rebellion Festival, which resulted in their first-ever European dates in Amsterdam and The Hague, in February, 2 dates in Berlin, in September, and Dublin in December. Catch them at a gig near you, soon!
