简介
It will be no surprise to learn that this new compilation album ‘Remembering’ (track 25), named after a song sent to me by Mike Sammes back in 1984, looks back at many of the classic country songs I recorded between 1974 and 2013. Several of them were originally recorded on vinyl L.P.’s and 45rpm singles and E.P’s, as well as on cassette tape and 8 track cartridges. (Whatever happened to them?). My country music singing career began in 1956, quickly building up a repertoire of dozens of country songs, over 300 of which I began recording in 1974. Now I am gradually compiling collections of songs as albums for release as digital downloads and streaming through CDbaby.com and their partner companies like iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon music, Rhapsody, Deezer and similar sites around the world. The first four of these releases, ‘The Country Side of Britain’, ‘More Songs from the Geoff Ashford Songbook’, ‘Country Music is my Life’ and the various artistes album ‘Sylvantone Singers and Songwriters’ featured a total of 60 original songs, all published by my own music publishing company, Sylvantone Music. Here on this new album in additional to the title track, there are three more original songs, two of which I wrote myself, with help from Geoff Ashford who wrote the melody for ‘The Floralia Gardens at Oosterhout’. This was written at the request of the organisers of this festival, which was often given the accolade as ‘Best Country Music Festival in Europe’. I was lucky to be offered sixteen annual appearances here, and was granted the title of ‘Mr. Floralia’ to go with the ‘Britain’s Mr Country Music’ title I was given by the BBC around 1976. I needed to write a ‘B’ side for the ‘Floralia’ song, so I just changed the words of ‘Guernsey I’ll Keep Coming Back to You’ and re-recorded the song with different backing musicians. Enjoy the steel guitar playing of a teenage Sarah Jory on my recordings of both of these ‘Holland’ songs, (tracks 1 and 11) who I also took to Floralia on several occasions. So, to avoid repeats by selecting only from recordings not previously released for digital download, I have chosen 26 more songs for your enjoyment, many of which were regularly requested by you at my live concert performances around the world. I had been singing songs like ‘Hey Good Looking’ (track 7), ‘Wedding Bells’ (track 19), and ‘Rhumba Boogie’ (track 18) with my R.A.F. Skiffle Group back in 1956/57, and learnt them from recordings by two of my earliest influences, Hank Snow and Hank Williams. My tours of Australia exposed me to the music of Slim Dusty, and I soon found that ‘Lights on the Hill’ (track23), was one of his most popular songs, written by his wife Joy McKean, who I had the pleasure of meeting along with Slim in London. I sing more classic country song covers, learn from recordings by a wide range of stars like Buck Owens, Porter Wagoner, Bobby Bare, The Eagles, Hank Thompson, Larry Gatlin, Jimmie Rogers, Alan Jackson and more. As well as Sarah Jory, top backing musicians like Derek Thurlby, Maurice Hipkiss (who also plays fiddle) and Arthur Layfield on Hawaiian and pedal steel guitar, lead guitar from Steve Isherwood, Bill Clarke as well from Derek Thurlby, and keyboard from Don Ange can be heard on this album. Also playing bass guitar and keyboard and adding different harmonies, the multi- talented Geoff Ashford adds a lot to my recordings. He takes the Don Rich harmony part on Buck Owens’ ‘Crying Time’ (track 2), and joins me during a recorded sound check (2 guitars and 2 voices) recorded live on the old Everly Brothers hit ‘Walk Right Back’. I count myself privileged to have had the opportunity of appearing on major stages throughout the world, including the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, WWVA Wheeling Jamboree in West Virginia, The Grapevine Opry in Texas, The Empire Pool, Wembley and the Palladium in London, Tamworth, Mildura, Parkes and Noosa Heads Festivals in Australia, leading Festivals in Holland, Switzerland and Germany, and feel lucky to have enjoyed wonderful support from my friends and fans throughout the world. Although I have now retired from touring, I invite you to continue to enjoy my music through digital downloads, or my many CD's, available through my website www.tonygoodacre.com Look out for another new compilation with 26 more different songs, due for release to mark my forthcoming 80th Birthday, - so keep listening and downloading, and thank you all for your continued support.
