简介
Ever After Land is the long awaited second album from this modern folk trio. There are some songs here about drinking, some songs about friends, some about politics, some about good people lost along the way... and some more about drinking! R2 magazine described the band's music as "choppy bass driven rockers with folk style harmonies, bright melodic fiddle with a rock edge" while the Folkwords blog said "Firedaze take multiple musical threads to create a tapestry of 21st Century Folk". After originally writing and performing folk rock with a mix of live drummers, sampled dance beats with pre-recorded drum patterns this album sees Firedaze take a turn towards a more stripped down basic and organic sound. These songs are built on sampled loops, foot percussion and String's driving bass lines intertwined with Jen's classically infused folk fiddle, Steff's acoustic and electric guitar and Steff's distinctive voice. Singer Steff and bass player String have been writing songs together for many years having formerly been the founders and main songwriters of 90's indie roots rock band Dead After Dark. The first Firedaze album "Triality" grew out of songs that had been around in Dead After Dark. However when it came to writing songs for the next Firedaze album the two musicians seemed creatively blocked and at a loss for quite a long time. The thing that changed was the arrival of fiddle player Jen. Although she is credited on some songs on Triality it was during the songwriting sessions for Ever After Land that she started to take an active role in writing songs and music. The result is an album full of the musical ideas of all three players - there's a nod to the past with the inclusion of "Apathy" - a favorite from Dead After Dark. All the other 10 songs are new and draw an a range of influences from Finnish folk to the kind of miserable world depicted in the Irish novel Angela's Ashes ("Da"). On the fiddle Jen draws on her classical music training to create her very distinctive fiddle playing style - an unusual mix of the looser folk tradition and the precision of the classical style of playing ("Friends Like These"). On the bass String makes the most of the lower notes on his 5 string bass ("Dirty"). In terms of singer Steff the song that reveals her bluesy vocal power best, and which touches lyrically on the personal loss of a good friend is the poignant "Angels with Broken Wings".
