简介
Tim McMillan hailing from Melbourne, Australia is a renegade everyman, an incredibly unique musician demonstrating virtuosic acoustic stylings which showcase both athletic guitar trickery and an astute sense of melodic songwriting. Since the release of his debut LP Afterparty Tim has toured Europe and Australia several times spreading the good word of his self-invented genre Goblincore (a melting pot of many styles, ranging from Swamp Folk to Acoustic Viking Metal). In between these tours he has been locked in the studio with a revolving dance floor of guest musicians who have helped create the new release 2.13 – a collection of songs, solo guitar pieces and instrumental tracks with full band accompaniment. The pieces on 2.13 are precisely executed excursions into the abstract. The guitar remains the focal point throughout the album, while soft (ghost like) three part vocal harmonies often seep in and out creating a beautiful, unique blend of acoustic music. When the solo voice appears, it is a warm, welcoming tone which often reminds listeners of Elliot Smith or Jose Gonzales. Songs such as A.M, Candles and Close have a similar musical feel to these songwriters, while heavier tracks X, Blackout and Bones appear to have been influenced by a wide range of artists including Kate Bush, Radiohead and even 90’s grunge rockers Alice in Chains. Keeping with tradition, McMillan’s lyrics on 2.13 remain incredibly enigmatic. Many passages do not appear in the form of verse and chorus, rather acting as a poem, giving some insight to the music below. Seemingly random topics such as Australian convicts, disability, Japanese kittens, car accidents and victims of crime are just some of many ideas explored and somehow cohesively bound together for this album. While the music and lyrics may appear dark, overlaying this is an innocent reprieve that manifests as excited guitar licks, mid song style shifts and a general quirky atmosphere - helping maintain a healthy balance between dark and light. Matt Crute (drums) and Brad Lewis (bass) who feature on Ghosts and A.M are now members of the live band and will accompany Tim on his travels through Europe and Oz to promote the release.
