Top up your myki card and come board the next Upfield line train with Jim Kane as it stops all stations to Moreland then travels express to somewhere deep in the recesses of his wandering, flighty mind…… Inspired by Sufjan Steven’s (ultimately doomed) ‘50 state project’, An Upfield Odyssey marks the first expedition of Jim’s somewhat humbler ’50 station project’, where he neglects basic housework duties and attempts to interpret his place in our universe from a variety of the ‘burbs that dot Melbourne’s Metropolitan train map. Each song on An Upfield Odyssey links to a zone 1 station on the Upfield line, as Jim details the ups and downs of a suburban human’s life during the first decade of the 21st millennium, including: Kane’s previous album, Trigger happy love (2009) was described as ‘troubadour pop’ and received acclaim from the Australian music media: ‘Jim Kane sounds like a songwriter from a different era, a man who possesses a great, emotive voice.” - Dom Alessio, Triple J. For the follow up, two of Melbourne’s most experienced and experimental producers, Neil Kelly (Slave Pianos) and Nao Anzai (No Zu), helped Jim to lay down the tracks. An Upfield Odyssey has influences as diverse as Howard Arkley, Courtney Barnett and David Bowie, and combines suburban folk-pop production with more otherworldly, synthesized sounds. It marks a voyage that feels a bit like buying minimum chips and a polly waffle from the tuckshop lady at the international space station.
