Living as he does within striking distance of the French Alps, composer Lionel Marchetti has, on several occasions, used field recordings sourced in the mountains as basic material for his own highly individual take on musique concrète. "La Grande Vallée", which Marchetti realised in the studios of the INA in France between 1993 and 1996 (the valley in question in fact refers to a quotation from the poet Chang-Tzu) features the sounds of mountain streams, birds -- singing and in flight -- and the rustling of grass and undergrowth, exquisitely mixed with sustained spacious drones and poetic vocal fragments to create a twenty-minute span of music rich in images and colour. It is as such perfectly in keeping with the aesthetic of the Metamkine Cinéma Pour L'Oreille label, which seeks to develop the idea of sound images, as opposed to the simple narrative of conventional film music, which this most assuredly is not.
