I always had a passion for music from Southern United States, be it country & western, Tejano, Southern rock, zydeco or blues. I had the idea of recording a country music album, but I ended up mixing my musical influences, as I always do. The result is a collection of songs that have two things in common, they all come straight from the heart and they are an amalgam of musical styles from The South, call it Americana if you like. I've included one cover, Neil Young's beautiful "Four Strong Winds", a song that I always play whenever I do a country music gig. I played bajo sexto and Dwayne Verheyden recorded the accordion track, giving it the Flaco Jimenez Tex-Mex feel I wanted. Dutch country singer Mariska Petrovic (Dolly, I Beg Your Pardon, The Fat Bastards) did the harmony vocal. A few years ago I wrote music to Italian texts by Genoese lyricist Luca Mauro. I wrote new lyrics in English for two of those songs: "Cubanita Blues" (originally "Regalami La tua Fidanzata") and "Sexy Luna". Naomi Adriaansz played tenor sax on the latter. I was going for a nightclub ambiance and she did a terrific job. When I started recording these songs it was my intention to have Marcel Philippi, a good friend and great guitarist, play all the electric guitar solos. Sadly, he passed away before all the songs were ready. He did the guitar solos on "Leaving Town" and "Good While It Lasted". And last but not least, as for all my albums, the photography and album cover artwork was done by Ecuadorian visual artist Andrea Boada, who also played the hand held percussion instruments on this album.
