简介
I started in the recording & songwriting business while I was a student at Eastern New Mexico U in Portales,NM.Luckily for me the Norman Petty Studio was located only 20 miles away.During this time Buddy Holly,Buddy Knox,The Fireballs,Jimmy Gilmer,& the Stringalongs were cutting their hits there,so the studio was quite well known.I was in the Ivy Jives & we cut two of my songs there which were released on the Jaro label in NY,a sub-sidiary of Top Rank Records. As a result of doing some studio work there for other people I got to know quite a few musicians. One of them,Larry Parks, was Roy Orbison’s drummer on “Only the Lonely” & he had toured with Orbison a good deal.He was acquainted with the Acuff-Rose people in Nashville & we were able to get some songs cut there. The Newbeats “Bread & Butter” was a hit for us & “Hey O Daddy O” & “Birds Are For The Bees” also charted.Robert Finnicum was a co-writer on the latter two.”Oh Girls” by Larry & me was on the New- beats “Run Baby Run” album. We also produced the Sparkles for Hickory Records.”No Friend of Mine”, one of ours, was recorded at Bradley’s Barn in Nashville with the late Wesley Rose assisting in produc- tion. The song is on Rhino Records”Nugget” collection. After writing for Acuff-Rose for five years,I moved to Houston where I performed & taught for several years. The trout fishing on the San Juan river got me hooked one summer,so I moved to the Four Corners area where my wife,Linda Jey & I worked as a duo for a few years.I also taught at San Juan College while there.I now live near Alto,NM,where I have a recording studio. Jay Turnbow Jay Turnbow started in the recording and song-writing business at the late Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico, during the time when Buddy Holly, Buddy Knox, the Fireballs, the Stringalongs, and Jimmy Gilmer were cutting hits there. While a student at Eastern New Mexico University in nearby Portales, Jay played lead guitar and wrote songs for the Ivy Jives, a well-known regional group. The Ivy Jives had releases on Jaro Records, a subsidiary of Top Rank Records out of New York. Working at Petty's studio, Jay became acquainted with King Curtis, Tommy Alsup, Waylon Jennings, Bob Montgomery, the Champs (Seals, Croft, and Burgess), and Larry Parks (drummer for Roy Orbison). In the early 1960's, Jay played lead guitar in a Booker T and the MG's road band and worked shows with the Markees, the Kingsmen, and the Surfaris. He and Larry Parks wrote songs together, and one of their first was "Bread and Butter" (see note) which led to their becoming staff writers for prestigious Acuff-Rose Music Publishing Company in Nashville. Among popular releases written by Turnbow and Parks at that time are "Birds are for the Bees," "Oh Girls," and "Hey-O-Daddy-O," all recorded by the Newbeats. (Bob Finnicum was a co-writer on these three cuts.) Along with the late Mr. Wesley Rose, Jay and Larry produced the Sparkles for Hickory Records. "No Friend of Mine" and "Oh Girls" were two of Jay and Larry's more popular songs cut by the Sparkles. In the 1970's and early 1980's, Jay performed in the Houston area and taught guitar for a large music store chain. Working in the Houston Gulf Coast, Jay performed shows with many popular entertainers including Willie Nelson, Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, Brian Collins, Justin Tubbs, Leona Williams, Jimmy C. Newman, and Floyd Tillman. He then moved to the 4 corners area of NW New Mexico where he and wife,Linda Jey performed as a duo in Colorado & New Mexico. He also taught guitar at two local music stores & was an adjunct professor of music at San Juan College teaching advanced guitar, theory & improvisation for several years. He now spends most of his time working on original music at his studio near Nogal,NM.
