Sylvan Shulman, a veteran of many years of Broadway, broadcasting and recordings, presents in this album a program of lilting, melodious and inventively orchestrated mood music for stimulating listening. Starting with the tantalizing measures of a tricky guaracha tat proclaims I Was Lucky, the Mood Rhythms Orchestra moves to the soft spell of Candlelight. It’s warm, intimate music, easy on the ears with a happy blend of sophistication and sentimentality. The lush treatment then gives way to some exciting sounds that sport a rocking beat. There’s sparkle a-plenty in this consistently lyrical tour de force that calls for an encore, since it’s titled, Round Trip Ticket. Up next is an animated novelty that brings to life a friendly, straw-faced scarecrow who begins to dance at the first stirring of a slight breeze. His merry, prancing attitudes are delightfully captured by the inventive Mood Rhythms orchestration, in Dancing Scarecrow. If you want to take a three-week vacation in three minutes, then join the swing fest that closes Side One. It’s a romper that crosses hill and dale, through rolling hills and sleepy towns on A Vacation Trip, with muted strings attached. On the second side, maestro Shulman invites everyone to a party. This shindig throws time to the winds, lets the seconds fly into hours and has all the participants ticking wildly. For it’s The Party Of The Clocks, a cavorting novelty for time-honored dancing and romancing. Another novelty follows – a series of spontaneous improvisations with solid rhythmic support that’s wistful and compelling as Charlie Sounds Off. No Tears, up next, is a ballad presented with sensitivity and a refreshingly romantic outlook. The invigorating arrangement will lend cheer to any blue mood. Then, Down Beat gets off a special treatment featuring strings, reeds, harp and drums, all dressed up in Shulman-style swing. For a windup, the Mood Rhythms Orchestra offers a fast, furious, frenzied samba beat with a wonderful undercurrent of romance lurking in the background. It’s called Samba-Nita. Whatever the mood, whatever the feeling... these selections are warm, soaring and unceasingly inventive – and always a joy to hear.
