Sylvan Shulman and His Orchestra. Sounds, people and romance are the highlighs of ‘Mood ‘Rhythms, Volume 2.’ East Sound West Sound is a sophisticated expression of big-city atmosphere, with a progressive swing from east shore to west shore and all around the town. But whether from east or west, north or south, a composite of most sounds is present in Sounds Of The Times, a multi-colored mood piece in which maestro Sylvan Shulman lays aside his baton for a solo violin stunt. The tune that follows it, is an easygoing ballad called Rhythm Revelation. All three selections mentioned above are the work of the noted composer, ‘Bugs’ Bower. The people conjured up by these Mood Rhythms are an extremely entertaining group of characters. First there’s the breezy arrangement of reeds and strings which represents the helter-skelter activities of a Junior Miss. Then the scene shifts to a starlit tropic night, replete with magic marimba and soaring strings and a haunting bolero dedicated to Juana. Another exotic gal, Naomi, has a split personality – a bewitching Near Eastern melody combined with a feverish swing tempo. The fourth individual concerned is Slippery Bill, the star of a bright novelty hoe-down that features an interesting banjo and fiddle effect. Romance comes to the forefront in Memories Of Home, a nostalgic and beautiful Italian love song presented in a delightfully lilting waltz tempo. A lonely French horn complements the strings and reeds in the romance-gone-astray instrumentation of the sensuous Blue Flame. But romance is righted again in the peppery swing samba that is a fast-paced musical inscription signed – Valentine.
