简介

“You Are Perfect” An original play written by Cyndy A. Marion Original Incidental Music composed by Joe Gianono You Are Perfect, which opened on February 5th, 2016, is a theatrical reimagining of the life of Susan Atkins, moving through time and space, questioning allegations of murder and deceit while having doubts about testifying against Charles Manson. Composer’s notes about the music: The score of You Are Perfect shares several important elements with the play. Time reference is one of them. Complexity is another. There are primarily three main instruments used in the score, flute, piano and guitar. Various effects are used to transform the sound as LSD would transform the mind, as the world changes around us. There are many musical quotes as well. Some should be obvious and some are not. The score is intended to have a “retro” reference, sometimes, very “retro”. As Charles Manson was considered a mythical, god-like figure that was worshiped by his followers the score references ancient mythological figures and circumstances with a philosophical point of view. The other obvious time stamp is the late 60’s, 1969 to be exact. It was the time of Woodstock, which I attended, the Beatles, the Viet Nam War, “Flower Children”, rampant drug use, social unrest, hippies and a changing world. The score references many of the artists and songs of that time. Many of the music cues have titles that are relevant to the circumstances of the play. As did the ancient Minoan civilization of Thera vanish in fury, so was the dark side of the Charles Manson legacy. 1. Shackles and Beads (Acid Dance) As the dual title would suggest, this music is about a “flower child” being trapped in a world of peace & love. Charles Manson and Susan Atkins dance wildly while they are tripping on “Acid”. I’ve always wanted to write a rock piece using this particular musical theme by the great Italian composer, Ottorino Respighi. I borrowed from his epic “The Pines Of Rome”, a symphonic musical tone poem depicting the large, statuesque pine trees in Rome, Italy. I saw this as the “perfect” (no pun intended) opportunity to finally do it. This theme is heard in the middle, played by the 2nd guitar and is in 6/4 time, meaning it has 6 beats, played against the other music is in 4/4 time. It’s what musicians call “across the bar line”. It helps to add a little ambiguity to the general situation. The larger than life reference between these trees and Charley Mansion was purely coincidental, but it seems appropriate. In any case, “all is fair in love and war”. 2. *Susan Atkins "OHANA" “OHANA” is a Hawaiian word relating to a unique sense of family, as in the Manson family, as it was referred to. Susan Atkins certainly shared this sentiment while she was a member. As the gentle instrumentation in the beginning would suggest, it has a very definite emotional soft (feminine) side and at the same time suggests a very, very dark world. At the end, the two note repeating musical figures that are played by the flute and piano, were borrowed from “And The Yard Went On Forever” which was written by one of my favorite composer’s, Jimmy Webb. This musical figure suggests rebirth, a child, as the two note guitar stabs just before it suggest the opposite. . This song is about family, arbitrary fate and ultimate destruction. Drawing from primal antiquity, Jimmy Webb uses the Latin language in the middle of the song to strengthen his point. De profundis clamavi ad te Domine "From the Depths, I Have Cried Out to You, O Lord", “Donae nobis pacem” “Bring us peace”. 3. A Step Away Everything is confusing but sometimes things settle down to a state of clarity. At times you are one step away from reality or in the words of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, “Just a shot away”. The guitar melody was borrowed from the 3rd movement of Symphony No. 3 by Johannes Brahms. 4. Castles A rock solid fortress of love and security isn’t always the case. 5. You Are Perfect Charles Manson says the words “You Are Perfect “ to Susan Atkins several times during the play. A peaceful world goes awry, happily ever after. It is 1969, the time of Woodstock, the Viet Nam War, and “Flower Children”. I can remember being covered in mud and listening to Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner on that important summer morning in 1969. I was 15 then. Sharon Tate was about 26. Several very relevant signature musical references from that time in history are incorporated in to this piece. I was 15 then. 6. A Summer Rising A day in a life in a seemingly, peaceful summer in an uncertain world. But “WE ALL SHINE ON” ... John Lennon. 7. Diodaeneasus The musical from of this piece is a classical “Passacaglia”, where the bass line keeps repeating. Some of the musical themes were borrowed from 17th century composer, Henry Purcell’s tragic opera “Dido and Aeneas”. The story is based on Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid. It recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her. It references the situation of Charley and Susan in reverse. 8. Three Three characters, ergo the title, changing over time. 9. Octaphilia A dark canonic piece representing the machinations going on in the mind of Manson. It is based on an “Octatonic” (8 note) musical scale, which is the basis of the diminished 7th chord, which is historically musically associated with pending doom. 10. One Step Beyond Everything is confusing but sometimes things settle down to a state of clarity. But then ... 11. Thera An ancient civilization crumbles along with Manson’s plans. This music was borrowed from Euripides, born in Athens, Greece, around 485 B.C. FYI: There are only about 40 fragments of music that survived from the great Ancient Greek civilization. Anything on paper was destroyed in a catastrophic volcanic eruption on the Greek island of Santorini around the year 726 AD. 12. Charles Oddity A thought, “Ground control to Major Tom”, David Bowie, RIP! 13. Darker and Shorter But Perfect .... and maybe happily ever after...
