Driftwood is an acoustic, allegorical concept album about the sea, ships, sailors, storms, mice, rats, islands and survival. As with any adventure, the story starts with dreams, followed by difficulties and drawbacks, a sense of feeling lost, being confronted with yourself, finding new perspectives and finally getting back out there. In the end the question remains: after this journey of discovery, what will you leave behind and what will you take with you? The album is composed of 11 songs outlining the story in chronological order. The songs are all short, fairly simply structured and only feature acoustic guitar and vocals. Anybody uses different techniques and chord voicings to deliver a coherent but at the same time varied album that doesn’t quite sound like any other acoustic guitar album produced to date. Production wise the sound is enhanced by using echo and, to a lesser extent, reverb effects to set the mood to mysterious, dreamy and contemplative, while maintaining some edge. The music is hard to label but is best described as a postmodern blend of fingerstyle, folk, rock and jazz. Anybody has delivered an album that is completely different from the previous album XIII. The artistic concept called for this different approach. In this case sparse song arrangements and the back to basics acoustic approach seem to fit best for the theme of the album. Who would expect a whole, electrically amplified band when you're washed ashore on a desert island? Explaining songs is always a bit awkward, but the imagery used in the song lyrics is a bit dark in a tongue in cheek kind of way and there is some caustic humor if one listens well. There is plenty of social criticism paired with personal contemplation to be discovered in the words.
