by Rick AndersonOn Mundo Civilizado, Arto Lindsay effected a successful fusion of American avant-rock, Brazilian pop and techno. On Hyper Civilizado, selected members of the techno elite return the compliment by remixing several tracks from Mundo Civilizado. It's a great idea and one which should have worked much better; unfortunately, there are serious problems, not the least of which is the inexplicable selection of only three album tracks to receive remix treatment. As radical as many of these deconstructions are, three versions of "Complicity" is probably two too many (though two of "Q Samba" is about right). DJ Spooky takes an uncharacteristically tedious turn with his "Mundo Civilizado Inversion Mix" (fully three minutes too long at 7:28), but SPIT's version of "Complicity" is genuinely terrifying. So is the "M28 Mix" of "Complicity," on which SPIT collaborates with DJ Mutamassik, and which strips all of the vocal track form the original save the single word "violence." Sub Dub's take on "Q Samba" is a particular highlight. But that leaves another 20 minutes or so of unrelieved monotony, and on a disc barely over 40 minutes in length, that's a pretty lousy batting average. Recommended for diehard techno-heads and Arto fans only.
