Delicate French piano pieces on a 12-foot piano? The advantage of the larger piano is its tone quality rather than its loudness. Longer strings will produce purer tones than shorter strings, and the listener will hear this most prominently on long, sustained notes. It was clearly a sense of mission that guided David Rubenstein in building the world's longest commercially available piano. When I asked him why he built it, his reply was that he had to. With prior experience in boat-building and cabinetry, but none in piano-building, he learned the necessary mathematics. After working on the instrument for three years, he produced the grandest piano. It is unique and formidable. David Rubinstein

A native of Los Angeles, David Rubinstein (not to be confused with David Rubenstein the piano builder) began playing the piano at age six. He studied piano with George Kochevitsky and later participated in master classes with Claudio Arrau and William Masselos. He has participated in recording sessions for all the major film studios, including several on-screen performances. He has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe with appearances including Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, the National Gallery of Art, London's Wigmore Hall, Lincoln Center, the Whittier College Bach Festival, the San Diego Convention Center, the Dame Myra Hess Series in Chicago, and numerous international radio broadcasts. In a 2009 concert entitled "Rubinstein plays Rubenstein" at Rubenstein Hall in El Segundo, California, Rubinstein performed on the piano featured on this recording, the Rubenstein R-371. He has recorded a wide range of repertoire for the Musicus label, including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Busoni, Prokofiev, and Schubert, as well as his own works. Website: DavidRubinstein.net
