简介
Jon Chapman's second release on CD Baby is the follow up to 2013's 'Forgotten Songs'. Recorded over roughly three years, 'Heavy Waves' represents a tying up of loose ends with some older songs that were rerecorded or remixed, and a handful of brand new material. "Four of the songs appeared on earlier albums", explains Chapman, "but I was never completely happy with those recordings". While his endless quest for perfection might seem to some like a sideways step, the pay-off is evident as Chapman breathes new life into 'It's Funny', the catchy album opener. This laid-back slice of acoustic pop could easily have come from the likes of Jack Johnson, Josh Rouse or Jason Mraz. "Over time, your approach to songwriting changes and sometimes its nice to play around with old songs and re-imagine them in a different style". This is certainly the case for 'You'd be a fool to lose that girl' which started life as an up-tempo indie rock song, sounding more like The Strokes circa 2001. "That one has certainly changed quite radically!", admits Chapman, "In my old band we used to play it really fast and loud but now its quite chilled out and has a Latin jazz kind of feel". The tracks on Heavy Waves point to a more mellow and groove-based approach to production. There's a loose feel to tracks like 'Call it love', 'Lose it all', and the playful Instrumental track that appears half-way through the album. "Lose it all was written when I was going through a phase of listening to a lot of Steely Dan records. I wanted a similar groove. Again, I hadn't been happy with previous recordings and it took a long time to get this one sounding right". While the older songs sound more complete and assured its the new songs that really capture the mood of the album. Title track 'Heavy Waves' finds Chapman in a wistful, sombre mood as he sings "...these days I don't know who I am, and it kind of feels right". But its the second track, 'Valley Of Hope', which really stands out. Its a song about finding inspiration and hope, and the creative process of writing songs. "Hope Valley is a place in the Peak District near to where I live in Sheffield", explains Chapman. "I went up there with my old band to write some songs in a log cabin. I just loved the symbolism and its such a beautiful name for a place to get away from it all and be creative". And with another album in the bag there are no signs of Jon stopping there. "For me the writing and recording process is never ending. The release of an album just represents a collection of songs which I have in a finished form and that I am happy with at that particular moment in time. I have plenty more songs, some old, and lots of new ones still to record". So there's plenty to look forward to on the horizon but for now sit back an enjoy: Heavy Waves Album Credits:- All tracks written by Jon Chapman All instruments played by Jon Chapman except:- Ben Trott plays lead guitar on 'Its Funny', 'Lose it all' and lead guitar and bass guitar on 'Call it love'.
