Mimicry is a study in soundscape composition as suspended in-between the organic and the synthesised. While some of its sounds resemble nature and its creatures, the piece doesn’t feature field-recordings nor samples. Instead, it utilises the complex electric paths a signal takes as it courses through a maze of interconnected devices. The microcosm created in this network soon takes a life of its own, producing tapestries and sonic objects that evolve and behave in a way that mimics the natural world. The cover art illustrates this process of spontaneous formation through a visualisation of the strange forces of attraction in a system of chaos. As described by the differential equations of Edward Lorenz, the peculiar initial state of such a system can lead to unpredictable complexity over time. The Butterfly Effect. The local instability that characterises an evolutionary process is counterbalanced by a global stability of the system, giving it its dynamic flow. Mimicry references these processes by experimenting with a composition practice based on such sensitivity to initial conditions. That is: creating an unstable environment in which sounds can arise and form sonic structures of evolving complexity.
