This brand new song is a creepy creation of the energy of Halloween...people love this holiday and enjoy showing it, celebrating it and getting there mask and party on! I throughly enjoyed Halloween as a kid but it lost its sparkle for me as an adult. When my now 13 year old son was little (and his mom and I were together) we all loved getting dressed up and going around our little apartment complex dressed up together.. As he got older and relationships changed, I found Halloween to be just for kids and didn't mind not accompanying him as he went trick or treating with his friends and aunt. But this year, things took an inspiring turn! When one of my all time favorite musicians MC Yogi announced a yoga retreat over the Halloween weekend with a Halloween party one night as part of it, I thought "I am so going to that!" (even though I live in NY and it's being held in SF! and hasn't even happened as I write, flight is tomorrow:-) Between planning to go to SF and having two others in my life that LOVE Halloween, I thought "Im going to write a Halloween song for that party and my friends!" Given the event date that I did sign up to go to (regardless if it gets played or not) I pushed myself to make the dream come true! I had been non-coincidentally led to an amazing drummer Elena Bonomo shortly before completing this tune and through her professional musician friends network worked out and recorded another soon to be released track "Daybreak" at the The KooP studio in White Plains NY run by the super talented (drummer as well!) Matt Graff. After having been blown away by how well the three of us knocked out "Daybreak" I thought, "maybe we can do the same for Happy Halloween?" Being a professional gigging drummer in demand Elena was to booked to record before Halloween during the times Matt's busy schedule had available. Fortunately Elena and I had one rehearsal set already for another in the works song called "Oh Manhatttan" and wound up spending some time on Happy Halloween. I was able to schedule two sessions with Matt in his busy calendar and took it upon myself to try to come up with a drum beat on what I had at my disposal. A cool effects pedal called a Beat Buddy. I found a "hip hop 4" beat that I thought was perfect as I played guitar and sang over it in my home studio. After having recorded the guitars during the first session not having any idea if I could pull off a drum track, vocals and bass at the next session...when I went back the miraculous Matt was a magician! I did my part of practicing my a** off before hand and thought to bring the beat buddy to let him hear what I thought could work. After tweaking the arrangement to add the "flourish" (as my one halloween lover friends suggested hearing the first round demo) of the beginning at the end as well we moved onto the vocals. Then Matt just imported the sound from the beat buddy into Pro Tools and cut and pasted like a genius. He added a really deep sounding bass track and even did a simple mastering before we both left the 5 hr session! My vision for the song is to take the next year to bring it to life even more and hold the desire and intention for an awesome video by next Halloween! To all trick or treaters far and wide, enjoy the night!
