Denton’s latest project, Building Up, could not be more appropriately titled. Working for over a year with producer, Mike Lais, in Nashville, TN, he has experimented with different sounds and eclectic songs, but through it all developed a signature sound marked by its energy, drive, and soulful vocals. Jay lies at the intersection of pop/rock and soulful singer-songwriter in a way that is both refreshing and moving. Building Up essentially has three chapters to it. The first six songs flow with a fun acoustic pop/rock vibe along a similar vein as the Goo Goo Dolls, Jason Mraz, Matt Nathanson, Lifehouse, and Gavin DeGraw. Then the turn comes with “Find Our Way”, the album’s seventh track, which immediately kicks the record into overdrive with rock guitars, heavier beats, and more intense songs. Finally the third part comes as the album winds down with “There’s A Place Inside Us That We All Call Home” and the acoustic version of “Find Our Way” – both songs stripped down to acoustic guitar, a single vocal and cello/violin. Each section tells a different part of Denton’s journey and displays a different angle of his artistry and writing. Having written every song himself with no co-writers, this project is a real, authentic glimpse into who he is and the journey he has taken as an artist. So just as the album title states, Denton is “Building Up”, and brick by brick, stone by stone we will see where this takes him.
