Fulero's 6th release as his anagrammatic alter-ego, Halo Refuser, 'Into Your Layers' is at times reminiscent of Jamie Lidell or Flying Lotus, at others Bluetech or Amon Tobin, but carries a consistently identifiable personality that pervades. Imprinting his singular production vision onto experiments in Neo-soul, Psy-dub, Trip-hop, and Downtempo, Fulero manifests a world where styles merge together into a warmly cohesive artistic voice. As expected from a veteran studio/stage pianist, keyboards are featured throughout- nearly every track has an electric piano involved and the synth work is some of Fulero's best. Singing, though, is the big news here. The 5 vocal tracks (of 10 on the album) mark the first time Fulero has paired his own voice with electronic productions. Metaphorically exploring relationships, introspection, and selfish giving, the vocals are vulnerable and multi-layered. The beatmaking is smart and creative, supporting the vocals while fluidly managing the flow of the instrumental tracks.
