This song is based on Wild Bill Hickock's last hand of cards in which he was famously murdered by Jack McCall. It imagines him pondering his regrets and accomplishments and the amazing transformation the country had gone through over the course of his life. Of course, he was shot in the back of the head and killed instantly so it's doubtful he had any thoughts at all at that moment.
