In the mid-90's Matt was studying guitar at college, and expecting his first child. Heavily influenced at that time by fingerstyle legends such as Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, and others, Matt began experimenting with alternate tunings and working on improving his fingerstyle technique. This song was largely composed during the time that Matt was expecting his first child. While still in the womb, the child seemed to enjoy listening to the music. After coming home from the hospital, the sound of this song instantly grabbed the attention of his newborn daughter, and it was clear that she recognized it. Matt finished the song but somehow never found the time to record it. 18 years later, with his baby girl now a graduating senior preparing to head off into the world, Matt started to prepare to record the song. While experimenting with microphone selection and placement Matt did several practice recordings, including this one. This track was meant to be nothing more than a warm-up, but something about the track simply felt right. There were bumps and creaks in the audio, and the playing was not perfect, but it was real, and honest, and heartfelt. Matt decided not to pursue perfection with the recording, noting that the raw honesty of the performance reflected the beauty but imperfection of both the player and the inspiration. Another year and a half after quietly releasing the song via his Facebook page only, Matt decided it was time to make the song available for purchase or streaming online.
