The burning bush of Exodus 3:2 has been interpreted by various traditions in Christian theology as a symbol of the Church - a vessel which is filled with the Spirit of God, the consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29), and yet is "not consumed." The burnt sacrifices of the Old Testament are now understood to have prefigured the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ, whose death and resurrection make it possible for us to come into the presence of God with confidence and boldness (Hebrews 10:19). Our earnest desire in worship is that we will offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1), and that Jesus Christ will be formed in us through the power of the Holy Spirit, to the glory of God the Father.
