简介
This album captures a great band at the top of its game. Church of Betty was ripping up Town Hall, Lincoln Center, NPR and Greenwich Village's legendary Bottom Line on a regular basis when Tripping With Wanda came out. Masters of "Indo-pop", a self-created style distinct from bangra or Bollywood, Wanda offers Indo-primed ecstatic psychedelia like Flowers Pushing Up, the euphoric anthem Cross of Gold, the sly raga-porn of The Tammy Show, and balls-to-the-wall rockers like Dirty Waters and Electric Chair. I Smoke You Jack is about the late father of performance art Jack Smith, who's ashes adorned Rael's apartment with Penny Arcade. The title cut Tripping With Wanda is a loving tribute to the bitchy female alter-ego of legendary theatre director John Vaccaro, who mentored Penny in the Playhouse of the Ridiculous in the '60s. All Music Guide wrote that Tripping With Wanda "conjures and cleanses, swoons and seduces. If otherworldly rock exists, this is surely as lofty as it gets." The core band: Chris Rael (voice, guitar, sitar), Deep Singh (tabla), Jon Feinberg (drums), Joe Quigley (bass), Marlon Cherry (guitar, djembe) & Gregor Kitzis (violin). "Tripping With Wanda conjures and cleanses, swoons and seduces. If otherworldy rock exists, surely this is as lofty as it gets. A rich, brimming, brilliant record." - All Music Guide Musicians: Chris Rael, Deep Singh, Jonathan Feinberg, Joe Quigley, Kenny Siegal, Brian Geltner, Marlon Cherry, Gwen Snyder, Gregor Kitzis, Ina Litera, Matthew Goeke, Leah Coloff, Dan Levine, Paul Shapiro, Cindy Rickmond.
