Recorded January 9, 2012 This cut of “You’re Gonna Be Late” was conceived on a 4 Track Zoom MRS-4B circa 2003 that I found on Craigslist for $50. Another raw recording featuring no correction or over dubbing on the tracks. Here is more of the back story. My teenage son wanted to do some multi tracking and asked if he could use my 16 track. My 16 track at that time and to this day is loaded with complete songs and even more ideas. I suggested he use my Fostex X15 4 Track Cassette recorder from 1984. I told him a couple stories of the great tracks I created on this unit and that it was simple and easy to use. He was excited and I was too! We found the power supply and searched through the house for a blank cassette. We tore the place apart looking for a blank cassette. We found none, and I headed to CVS to buy one. Darn, our local CVS stopped carried cassettes. Disappointed yet determined I headed home ready to look through the attic for a blank cassette. Once in the attic, I spotted my brief cases and boxes full of 20+ years of cassette recording. Whamo! In the 3rd brief case I found a new 6 pack of blank TDKs. I ran upstairs and told my son to grab an instrument and give the X15 4 Tracker a test drive. He eagerly plugged in, put on the headphones, hit record and the head locked up. I could feel the disappointment and immediately ran down to the garage and got a screw driver. I took the back off the recorder as my son said, “Dad do you know what you’re doing?” “Of course, I replied. As bluffed my way through and disengaged the head. “Let’s try it again”, I boasted. Once he finished I told him to play it back. I saw the empty stare in his eyes and within seconds he handed me the headphones. . .the instrument was not picked up on the track, only deep hiss. That night I found a Zoom MRS-4B on Craigslist for $50 and picked it up the next day. Since I needed to show my son how to use this machine I needed some material to record. I pulled out my Yamaha programmable keyboard looking for an archived track. To my surprise the archived songs had disappeared. I programmed another set of tracks on the Yamaha on that night. The next morning, I was asked to drive my son to school. During the ritual of getting him up and out the house I quickly fired off the first 2 tracks and thought I would scratch them when I came home and work on the tune over the weekend. When I listened to the play back later that evening, I felt the first 2 tracks were pretty tight and that I should lay down the guitars and some additional vocals and call it finished. Inspired by the song, during that weekend I created a video for “You’re Gonna Be Late”. Hope you enjoy this cut and eventually find the video.
