Recorded June 29, 2012 This cut of Barnyard Rock chronicles a couple eras of my journey as a singer songwriter. I wrote Barnyard Rock when I was in Second Generation in 1980 with Dan Rothchild and David Smithey. Dan was an incredible musical influence. Everything he did was so natural and fluid. David was the drummer in my first band and we spent many years playing together on several different projects. One of the projects was the Young McDonald’s. The name of that project was inspired by this tune. Sometime in the late 80’s I started to experiment with programmable keyboards. I’ll never forget the first song I programmed into my Yamaha keyboard – it was the Brad classic, “I am a Pig”. At that time, I performed several nights a week at Mama Pajama’s in Los Angeles on Venice Blvd. A coffee shop known for its bohemian folk music culture. One Friday night I did my acoustic set with the accompaniment of the Yamaha keyboard. I was elated my programming worked perfectly with my guitar and vocals. During that night, a few friends and folks I had never met before told me that using the programmable keyboard destroyed the integrity of the Acoustic music genre that was the DNA of Mama Pajama’s. As a performer this was the most attention I had ever gotten. Even though just about every one hated this concept, I continued to create songs using a programmable keyboard. Unfortunately, I am way behind in technology. I know when I am able to upgrade my Radio Shack 386 desktop to an i7 or better I will experiment with virtual instruments. That day will may come soon if a can sell a few MP3 downloads or hit the lottery. In June of 2012, I was goofing around on the Yamaha keyboard on my tune “Crappy Car”. A few minutes later I programmed Barnyard Rock. I plug the keyboard into my Korg D1600 recorder and laid down the guitar and vocal tracks in one take in the Brad Cave. I mixed the tracks into Audacity so I could create wav and mp3 files. This is an Artist cut of Barnyard Rock and the mistakes on this performance are included at no extra charge.
