简介

The composer's first foray into large-scale electronic sound production, "Spirit Dances" was designed from the outset as a vehicle for a modern dance ensemble. There is much emphasis on rhythm and also on spatial movement of the sounds. Originally subtitled "Celebrations of 1975", several momentous events of the previous year in the composer's life were chronicled. These included: the birth of his first child, starting a major full-time job, completion of graduate studies, and moving across country. "Private Obsessions" (1979-1985) began as an experiment in repetitive writing. Each of the ten sections is based upon an elaborate and sometimes lengthy pattern -- totally obsessive in nature. However, not all parts of the pattern are revealed at any given time thanks to the subtle use of mixing techniques. Parts of the pattern fade in and out or start and stop abruptly. Additionally, other sounds are layered on top and woven around the core of repetition so that one occasionally is distracted from the obsessive nature of the underlying materials. Kenneth A. Jacobs (D.M.A. University of Texas at Austin) is a composer and artist. He has been awarded The American Prize, International New Music Composers Prize, and awards from City College of New York, Brown University, Texas Music Educators Association, and the Tennessee Music Teachers Association. The cover art is a painting by the composer titled "Cathedral Vision" ©1983
