Draw Down the Dark Moon
简介
There are fifteen linked pieces of music in "Draw Down the Dark Moon" which were created with digital and analog equipment and completed in 1982. This music is symphonic in nature and epic in proportions, although the sounds were created entirely with synthesizers. The main title refers to cycles of fertility (both creative and procreative) and was suggested by the ancient Greek poet Pindar. (The subtitle of the work is "Rites of Fertility".) Frequent mood shifts reflect these diverse cycles, the timely participation in which ultimately leads to an exhilarating celebration of life. Three hundred twenty images were hand-painted by the composer on glass or acetate to accompany this music. These images, designed for translucent viewing, were subsequently converted to photographic transparencies and projected along with the music synchronously. Bright colors and frequent geometric (especially circular, molecular, and cellular) patterns form abstract constructions on a perpetually dark background. The cover artwork for this album is the concluding image of the presentation. A video version of the entire multimedia work now is available on DVD. Kenneth A. Jacobs (D.M.A. University of Texas at Austin) is a composer and artist. He has been awarded The American Prize, International New Music Composers Prize, and awards from City College of New York, Brown University, Texas Music Educators Association, and the Tennessee Music Teachers Association.
